How aware are your employees of their pension benefits?

Most employers offer their employees a good or even excellent collective pension scheme. But are your employees fully aware of this benefit? Often they see the compulsive own contribution, but do they also realise the value of their pension?

Employee awareness of pension benefits is poor

Recent research shows that eight out of ten employees are not aware of what their pension scheme actually implies. They do not dwell on the following questions nor do they know the answer:

  • When I turn 65 how much will I receive?
  • If I die unexpectedly how much would my partner and children receive?
  • If I become disabled how much will I receive?
  • Should I transfer my current pension sum to my new employer?
  • If I divorce, how will this affect my pension?

The Uniform Pension Statement (UPO) is already an improvement, but the large quantity of information on paper is too much to get through for many employees. Moreover, the UPO does not give any insight into the (financial) efforts of the employer.

Written information is often not the best solution

We believe a lack of awareness is an enormous shame for your employees and also for you as employer. It does not do justice to your efforts to ensure a good pension policy. In our experience more written information is not the best solution, as it can disappear unread. What it lacks is direct communication with the employees and (if so desired) their partners.
